The Telepathy Game: The Ultimate Icebreaker to Sync Your Team

Time taken to read : 23 minutes

Does your team feel out of sync? Maybe you are tired of the same old “two truths and a lie” or awkward Zoom happy hours where everyone stares at their cameras in silence. You want an activity that is quick, fun, and actually reveals how your colleagues think.

Introducing the Telepathy Game, known in Japan as the Ishindenshin Game.

This isn’t just a game; it is a practical training ground for “unspoken understanding”— a key element of high-performing teams. Here is how to play it, why it works, and how to take your team building to the next level with Japanese-inspired activities.

What is the “Telepathy Game”?  : The Japanese Concept of Ishindenshin

In Western business culture,  people often say that it is best to, “Over-communicate to avoid errors.” But in Japan, there is a concept called “Ishindenshin” (以心伝心).

It translates to “heart-to-heart communication” or often described as a form of intuitive, unspoken understanding. It describes a team so in tune with each other that they don’t need words to understand the goal. They just know.

The Telepathy Game is a fun, low-stakes workshop designed to test and build this exact skill. The goal is simple: Everyone must give the exact same answer to a question without consulting each other.

Why It’s Perfect for Modern Teams

  • Instant Icebreaker: Since there is no “correct” factual answer, it levels the playing field. Introverts and extroverts participate equally.
  • Visualizing Perspective: It quickly reveals who is on the same page – and where perspectives differ – which is a great conversation starter.
  • Building Empathy: To win, you have to stop thinking, “What do I like?” and start thinking, “What does the team think?” It builds cooperation and harmony.

This exercise works equally well for in-person, hybrid, and remote teams.

How to Play: Rules & Topics

Time: 15–30 Minutes

Players: 4–6 per team

Tools: Whiteboards and markers (or digital tools like Miro for remote teams).

The Rules

  1. The Prompt: The facilitator asks a question (e.g., “What is the ultimate comfort food?”).
  2. The Thought Process: Players have 30 seconds to think. No talking allowed!
  3. The Reveal: On the count of three, everyone reveals their answer.
  4. The Outcome: If everyone’s answer matches perfectly, the team passes the round!

Beyond Telepathy: 5 Ways to Experience “Real” Japanese Team Building

The Telepathy Game is a fantastic warm-up to sync your minds. But if you want to forge deeper bonds, you need an immersive experience that moves the body and stirs the spirit.

At IKUSA, we specialize in unique “Edutainment” ,a blend of education and entertainment events. We combine Japanese cultural themes with serious team building methodology.

Here are 5 unique activities we recommend for global teams, ranging from samurai battles to high-tech survival games.

1. SAMURAI BATTLE / Chanbara Battle

Category: Strategy & Action This is not just a sword fight; it is a business strategy game disguised as a samurai battle.

  • The Activity: Teams use safe foam swords to knock off a “life ball” attached to the opponent’s arm. It is safe, painless, and incredibly fun.
  • Why it works: The core of this game is the “Gun-gi” (War Council). Before each round, teams must stop to discuss strategy, assign roles, and plan their formation. It is the PDCA cycle in action—perfect for training leadership and communication.
  • Global Friendly: English MCs and rulebooks are available. Simple rules mean anyone can jump in instantly.

2. THE ENIGMA ESCAPE

Category: Intellectual & Logic If your team prefers brain power over physical power, this story-driven puzzle game is the answer.

  • The Activity: Your team is trapped in a scenario (like the burning “Honnoji Temple” or a secret “Ninja Village”) and must solve riddles to escape within the time limit.
  • Why it works: The puzzles are designed so they cannot be solved by one person alone. Information is fragmented, forcing the team to share clues and listen to each other. It naturally creates a “flat” hierarchy where the best idea wins.
  • Global Friendly: We offer English-localized kits. It can be held in any conference room or banquet hall.

3. Samurai Undokai: Japan’s Team Sports Festival

Category: Sports & Inclusivity In Japan, the Undokai (Sports Festival) is a legendary event for building unity. We’ve turned it into a “Samurai Style” festival.

  • The Activity: Forget boring sprints. We feature unique, culturally immersive games like the “Giant Bale Roll” (rolling a huge 2-meter rice bale) or “Samurai Basket Toss.”
  • Why it works: The games are designed to be “unbalanced”—meaning athleticism isn’t the deciding factor. Coordination and teamwork are the only ways to win. It is highly inclusive for all ages and fitness levels.
  • Global Friendly: A visual spectacle that looks amazing on social media. English support is available to guide the energy.

4. THE TUNA SPECTACLE

Category: Culinary Entertainment & Culture Food is the universal language of team- building. We bring a traditional Japanese market experience directly to your office or venue.

  • The Activity: A professional sushi chef dismantles a massive tuna (often 40kg+!) right in front of your team. It is a high-energy performance that engages the audience, followed immediately by a fresh sushi party.
  • Why it works: Eating together (sharing the same pot) is the oldest form of bonding. The sheer visual impact of the giant tuna creates a shared “Wow!” moment that dissolves barriers and sparks conversation naturally.
  • Global Friendly: It is a visual performance that transcends language. We can also accommodate dietary restrictions (providing vegetable sushi or other options) so everyone can enjoy the celebration.

5. EXPLORATION QUEST

Category: Sightseeing & Exploration Turn the city itself into your playing field. This is perfect for teams visiting Japan who want to sightsee and bond simultaneously.

  • Why it works: It combines “team-building” with “Tourism.” Teams must manage their time and route effectively (Resource Management) while creating shared memories of their travels.
