The Categories Game: A Rhythm-Based Ice Breaker for Any Team

Time taken to read : 17 minutes

Whether you are hosting a corporate icebreaker, a family gathering, or a casual party, finding a game that requires zero equipment and works for any group size is a challenge.

Enter the Categories Game, known in Japan as the Kokon Tozai Game or Yamanote Line Game.

It is a fast-paced, rhythm-based activity where players must name items within a specific category to the beat of clapping hands. It’s simple, high-energy, and surprisingly effective at sharpening your brain.

What is the Categories Game?

The premise is simple: A category is chosen (e.g., Countries in Europe), and players must take turns naming an item that fits that category.

However, there is a catch—you must stay on beat.

In Japan, this game is famous as the Yamanote Line Game, where players traditionally named train stations on Tokyo’s busy loop line. Today, it has evolved to include any topic, making it a universal tool for testing memory, vocabulary, and composure under pressure .

How to Play: The Rules

The goal is to keep the rhythm going without repeating an answer or hesitating.

The Setup

  1. Form a Circle: Participants stand or sit in a circle facing inward.
  2. Set the Beat: Establish a steady rhythm. The standard is a “Clap-Clap” (two claps) pattern.
  3. Choose a Category: The facilitator selects a theme (e.g., Fruits).

The Gameplay Loop

  1. The facilitator starts by announcing the category: The topic is… Fruits!
  2. Everyone starts the rhythm: Clap-Clap, Clap-Clap…
  3. Player A shouts an answer on the beat: Apple! (Clap-Clap)
  4. Player B shouts the next answer: Banana! (Clap-Clap)
  5. Player C shouts: Orange! (Clap-Clap)

Elimination

You are “out” if you:

  • Break the rhythm (hesitate too long).
  • Repeat an answer that has already been said.
  • Give an incorrect answer (e.g., saying Carrot for the category Fruits).

The game continues until only one player remains .

Recommended Categories (Themes)

The success of the game depends on choosing the right category for your group. Here are some ideas ranging from easy to creative.

Level 1: Easy (For Kids or Warm-ups)

Focuses on speed and visual traits.

  • Colors
  • Animals
  • Sports
  • Fruits/Vegetables
  • Things that are white (e.g., Cloud, Tofu, Snow)

Level 2: Standard (For General Groups)

Requires specific knowledge and memory.

  • Countries of the World
  • Capital Cities
  • Elements of the Periodic Table
  • Brands of Cars
  • Pizza Toppings
  • Movies by a specific director (e.g., Spielberg or Ghibli)

Level 3: Creative / Funny (For Teams & Parties)

Subjective categories that spark laughter and friendly debate.

  • “Things you find in a billionaire’s house.”
  • “Excuses for being late to work.”
  • “Superpowers you don’t want.”
  • “Lines you want to say in a movie before you die.”
  • “Three items you would take to a deserted island.” (Reveals personality and priorities!)

3 Benefits for Team Building

Why should you play a children’s game at a corporate event?

1. Instant Ice Breaker

Because the rules are so simple, it eliminates awkwardness immediately. Playing with niche categories related to your specific industry (e.g., Programming Languages or Office Jargon) creates an instant inside joke for the team .

2. Sharpening Conversation Skills

Winning requires having a stock of answers ready in your head while listening to others. This trains the brain to retrieve information quickly and listen actively—key skills for keeping conversations flowing in sales or networking scenarios .

3. Brain Training (Cognitive Activation)

It is a workout for your working memory. You must remember what has already been said (to avoid repetition) while simultaneously thinking of your next answer, all while keeping a physical beat. It activates the brain without feeling like work .

Real Feedback from Players

  • “It’s hilarious when you hear someone scream ‘Ah! You stole my answer!’ just before their turn.”
  • “We changed the rule to ‘Compliments about the person to your left,’ and the whole room filled with smiles. It was a great morale booster.”
  • “Using nostalgic themes like ‘Cartoons from the 90s’ got the managers more excited than the new hires!”
